REINDEER SAFARI TO THE SAMI VILLAGE OF PURNUMUKKA (duration approx. 4.5 h)

We pick you up from your place of accommodation at Saariselkä and transport you to the old Sami village of Purnumukka. On arrival, we provide you with warm clothing and gear to en-joy the outdoors. You’ll sit down in a traditional Lappish sleigh harnessed up with the herder’s drive reindeer, nestled comfortably in the warm embrace of reindeer hides and blan-kets, with no need to worry about a little or even a little more frost on your journey. While driving the reindeer on one of the most reliable modes of transportation in the arctic regions, you can feel at one with the journeymen of old and take pleasure in the real peace and quiet of nature. During your sleigh ride, you’ll get to see the old Lappish village of Purnumukka with its traditional red-and-white wooden houses as well as experience the purity and serenity of the surrounding forests and open country—the snap of hooves and murmur of the sleigh being the only sounds you hear. At the midway point of the outing, we’ll stop to warm ourselves at a ‘kota’ (Lapp tepee) in the forest, where we’ll have a good lunch and coffee in the glow of the open fire while the herder tells of the reindeer and the livelihood they support. During the break, our animals have also had a fine chance to rest, so we continue our travels back to the village courtyard. As a souvenir of your trip, you’ll receive an International Reindeer Driving Licence, after which we’ll take you back to Saariselkä.
