PURNUMUKKA REINDEER FARM

Purnumukka is a small, traditional Lappish village, 30 km south of Saariselkä. Local herder Markku Nikodemus began training drive reindeer here, first for competition but soon, with the growth in Saariselkä tourism, also for more peaceful rides with sleighs. In 1990, he estab-lished a family business called Purnumurkka Reindeer Farm, whose operations have ex-panded from three male deer to the current 25 draught reindeer. In addition to the latter, Markku, his wife Satu and several herders from Vuotso work for the firm.

The business was expanded in 1996 to Riekkovaara Hill near Saariselkä. The reindeer farm at this location, with its idyllic cabins and traditional Lappish fields offer excellent year-round facilities to serve larger groups as well.

You can participate in reindeer safaris of various lengths and kinds with us, enjoy lunch or coffee in the ‘kota’ (Lapp tepee), discuss reindeer and reindeer management, listen to tradi-tional Lappish chanting or even try your hand at throwing the lasso. We can provide guidance in Finnish, English and German.
