RIEKKOVAARA HILL IN THE SUMMERTIME

Within the vicinity of Saariselkä, the Riekkovaara Hill Reindeer Farm offers you a wonderful opportunity throughout the year to get acquainted with reindeer and the Sami way of life. The farm has a Lapp-style area built up in the traditional way with a timbered main building, a ‘kota’ (Lapp tepee), shoreline sauna by the pond, offices and a reindeer enclosure including reindeer.

Riekkovaara Hill Reindeer Farm is the Nikodemus family’s summer place, and you really do have the chance here to get to know the whole family. During our visit, we feed the reindeer inside the enclosure and tell you about reindeer management. After that, there’s opportunity to take the lasso in your hand and practise, under the reindeer’s guidance, how to throw the lasso. In the idyllic old cabin, you can enjoy a cup of coffee or a tasty traditional meal pre-pared from delicious reindeer meat or salmon. Another memorable treat, crowning your visit, is the herder’s ‘joiku’, or Lappish chant.

Riekkovaara Hill Reindeer Farm is open to the public on a reservation basis for coach groups from June to September.
